Things to do in Athens

On this website you can find all information about getting around in Athens.

Our recommendations

Accomodation

It's advisable to avoid areas such as Metaxourgio, Omonoia, Pl. Attikis, and Victoria. We want your experience to be enjoyable, so these suggestions are meant to ensure your safety and comfort during your time in Greece.

Although it might seem more convenient to stay close to the wedding venue, we suggest to look into accomodations close to Monastiraki & Plaka as they are closer to our favorite spots and touristic highlights.

Getting around Athens

Also we know that Dutchies can be very enthusiastic about biking around but it's something to be avoided in Athens. Public transport, walking around and taxis can get you anywhere you need to be for a fairly cheap amount. Keep an eye on potential strikes that could affect public transportation. Additionally, when relying on walking, be mindful that the estimated time on Google Maps might not account for the actual terrain, so plan accordingly. For taxis, we suggest using the Uber or FreeNow apps for a hassle-free experience.

Day trips from Athens:

Culinary exploration

Besides the recommendation for Food Tour we collected a list of places that we think are worth your time and visit. Prices and locations vary, so make sure to check in advance where they are and what they offer so you won’t be surprised!

Note: some of the websites are only in Greek but don’t let it stop you from exploring them, trust us they are worth the try! Besides you can always use google translate for the web versions.

  • Ilias1958: if you visited Athens with Yvet before you sure have been there as it's a favourite and next to her house, so make sure to let her know when you are there maybe she is around and she can pass by for a hi :)
  • Rozalia: tavern in Exarchia, close to Yvet's place. Try to eat there at least once, we believe you won't regret it!

  • Ama laxei  use google translate as website only in greek. Great food, in the centre of Athens.
  • Athinaikon
  • ELlla Greek cooking
  • Varoulko has several awards and recognitions (including Michelin!) so might be worth a visit but be careful of the prices!
  • Hytra
  • Lyra
  • Lagoudera for fresh seafood (and on a lower budget!) ->  You need to make a reservation in advance, usually also has live music
  • Bit further from the centre but hard not to include in the list of recommendations Xoxlidaki as its an old time favourite

As for drinks, Athens is really famous for the great cocktails so make sure to go to one of the many rooftop terraces. Places like 360o, Colour Local, A for Athens, are only a few examples that's worth visiting for a signature cocktail with a great view.
